2min2x Oral Health Literacy Campaign Launching August 6 2012

California Dental Association "Update" Magazine, Vol. 24 Issue 7 July 2012:  "National Oral Health Ad Campaign to Encourage Brushing '2min2x':  An unhealthy mouth can be linked to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.  It also can impact a child's ability to learn, develop self-esteem and speak properly.  Compounding these problems, more than 16 million children suffer from untreated tooth decay.  These are just a few of the reasons a three-year national advertising campaign on the importance of good oral health is kicking off during the week of Aug. 6.......The goal will be to improve children's (ages newborn-12) oral health by educating and caregivers about the importance of a healthy mouth, and motivating and empowering them to prevent children from experiencing dental pain........The campaign will focus on elevating the importance of simple behaviors such as brushing "2min2x" - or two minutes, two times a day - and monitoring that activity....The campaign is developing a website for the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives as a central place for campaign materials."

ADA News March 19, 2012 Article page 12:  "SG tobacco report's major conclusions summarized:  Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults, an evidence-based report of the surgeon general, has five major conclusions:  *Cigarette smoking by youth and young adults has immediate adverse health consequences, including addiction, and accelerates the development of chronic diseases across the full life course.  *Prevention efforts must focus on both adolescents and young adults because among adults who become daily smokers, nearly all first use of cigarettes occurs by 18 years of age (88 percent) with 99 percent of first use by 26 years of age.  *Advertising and promotional activities by tobacco companies have been shown to cause the onset and continuation of smoking among adolescents and young adults.  *After years of stead progress, declines in the use of tobacco by youth and young adults have slowed for cigarette smoking and stalled for smokeless tobacco use.  *  Coordinated, multicomponent interventions that combine mass media campaigns, price increases including those that result from tax increases, school-bases policies and programs, and statewide or community-wide changes in smoke-free policies and norms are effective in reducing the initiation, prevalence and intensity of smoking among youth and young adults.
This report of the surgeon general was prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Office on Smoking and Health."

NCI Launches Smoking Cessation Phone Programs For Teens

"NCI Launches Smoking Cessation Phone Programs for Teens:  Because a cellphone is likely one thing a teenage smoker will pick up more often than a cigarette, the National Cancer Institute's Smokefree Teen program offers Smokefree TXT, a free mobile tool to help teens stop smoking.  "With 75 percent of youths between the ages of 12 and 17 owning a cellphone, there is immense potential for mobile technologies to affect health awareness and behavior change among teens," said Erik Augustson, Ph.D., a behavior scientist in the NCI's Tobacco Control Research Branch.  Smokefree TXT is a free mobile service designed for young adults that provides round-the-clock encouragement, advice and tips to help teens stop smoking for good.  Teens can text the word QUIT to IQUIT (47848) from their mobile phones, answer a few questions and start receiving messages.  Signups can also be initiated online at "www.teen.smokefree.gov/smokefreeTXT.aspx", where participants can click on the button to answer a few questions and then start receiving texts."   (Excerpt from the ADA New March 19, 2012 Edition Page 14)
